The 7s Superfish gives you the width and thickness needed to propell you swiftly across the wave surface while at the same time giving the feeling of a thinner railed board. It does this with the use of a step-deck design that is thicker in the centre and thinner at the rails. This design allows you to push the board through sharp turns and improves its hold while doing so.
The 7S Superfish is super quick and loose. Thanks to its rails it goes hard off the lip then picks up serious speed when turning off the bottom. Its flat, low rocker base drives this board forward with minimal resistance. I did find that this board was a little too loose for my liking however this is part of the nature of a fish surfboard.
Board Design
As you can imagine a flat bottom on a board will create less friction with the water. It will also however reduce the turning ability and its performance in sucky, hollow waves. It is this design that allows it to move with speed through smaller and less powerful waves. The 7S Superfish has a concave base that channels water (similar to a jet) down the centre and out through the tail of the board. This gives it drive and assists the rails to hold an edge in the face of the wave.
The 7S Superfish comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 5’8 to 6’3 and is available in Epoxy and regular “stringer based” fibreglass coated. All boards, regardless of size have a swallowtail that breaks up the water as it leaves the tail of the board. This adds to the looseness of the board and assists with its turning by allowing water to pass through the “V” shape when put on its edge.
In Summary
As far as I’m concerned every keen surfer should have a fish in their quiver for those small, onshore days. While this board is not the ultimate board, it does do what it is designed for quite well and it does it at a reasonable price too. The 7S Superfish is made by a computer “pop-out” so mass production is relatively easy and cheap. If you’re used to surfing in two foot slop with heavy crowds then it will definitely give you the advantage, allowing you to catch smaller waves earlier and much more easily than anyone out there on a three fin Thruster. Take it out in some sucky, low tide beasts however and you’ll find yourself nosediving and probably not able to hold an edge too easily. If you love surfing and are keen to get out there every day rain, hail or shine, then I would definitely recommend having one of these in your arsenal.
